Wedding Photography Rates
The burning question that a lot of aspiring photographers have is usually ‘what’s the general wedding photography rate for someone who knows how to shoot a wedding?’. In fact, we’d be surprised if you had the skill set to be a freelance wedding photographer without asking yourself the question ‘how much money could I make from doing this professionally?’. So, in today’s article, we’re going to shed a little light on the subject and discuss the general earnings of a wedding photographer. Let’s talk about wedding photography rates!
General Wedding Photography Rates - In general, wedding photographer prices in the U.S. tend to range between $1,200 and $3,000, with the average wedding photographer cost hovering around $2,000. A wedding photographer will likely earn up to 12% percent of the client’s overall budget for the wedding. But the burning question is what’s the reasonable price to charge for offering your services? Don’t forget this is what the experienced photographers in the wedding photography field charge, so what should you charge as a beginner or as someone who isn’t as experienced as the next photographer?
Well, your clients should expect the wedding photography cost to run anywhere between $2,500 and $10,000 depending on your experience as a photographer along with what you're including in your wedding package. Wedding photography packages should typically cover eight hours of work time, on average. More or less shooting time will influence your cost of service so, be sure to bare this in mind when creating your wedding photography contract.
Wedding Photography Rates (Per Hour) - Some advanced learners of wedding photography do (and should) command as much as professionals do within their fees. With that being said, the photography schools are cranking out a lot of newly pressed photographers and many are trying to earn an income and attempting to get their foot in the door. So, semi-pros usually charge around $50 – $150 per hour or $25-125 per image and that’s without including your tips for doing a good job! Let’s talk about this one next...
Wedding Photography Rates (Tips) - Now we’ve got to make this point very clear, it’s not compulsory for your client to tip you, so you shouldn’t have that expectation when you take on the gig, but it is possible that you may walk away with more money than you’ve asked for, which is always a bonus if your clients are feeling generous and you’ve done well. So, go on and give yourself a pat on the back as a job well done. Your clients will usually give you somewhere between $50 to $200 as an extra gesture. If there are two or three shooters, giving a $50 to $100 tip to each person (who doesn't own the business) is optional.
Wedding Photography Rates (Per Year) - In terms of an annual salary, the average expected pay for a wedding photographer is $62,135 per year. This is significantly higher than the wage for other types of photography, which was $34,070 annually in 2016 FYI. Of course, these rates will vary from professional to professional, but these are the fees that you could potentially charge for your services!
