About Illustrative Wedding Photography - In short, the answer is YES! Illustrative wedding photography is a slightly newer style designation than the likes of traditional wedding photography (obviously) and photojournalism wedding photography, but it has been around for a while.

Illustrative wedding photography contains elements of both photo-journalistic wedding photography and traditional wedding photography. An illustrative photographer will try to shoot a wedding in a more candid style, but will improve the circumstances where possible. This may include selecting the perfect outdoor background to shoot the couple in front of, or changing the lighting indoors to improve the end result. The photographer may ask the Bride to get dressed close to an open window with natural light available, but then photograph her in a candid style with no posing.

Creating Illustrative Wedding Photography - As creatives, it’s common knowledge that photographers find themselves bombarded with ideas and visuals all the time.  Images will appear in their minds and we wouldn’t be surprised if they enter into over drive when provided with a couple in love, celebrating their union on a very special day indeed!  So, imagine the freedom a creative individual would feel when their couple shares their wish with them for some strong visuals, artistic flair and real, raw emotions to be captured. Automatically, we know that they are seeking what we call illustrative wedding photography.

We think that it’s fair to say that all couples feel a little lost at some point when it is time to have their couple photos captured on their wedding day.  They certainly don’t want staged, cheesy and stiff looking images. Quite the opposite actually. It is completely normal to feel a little lost on how to go about it. That is the perfect setting for you (the photographer) to gently help them by seeking out some elements that will be visually stunning and simply providing them comfort with words and direction to have them be in the right place at the right time.

Most of the time, your clients will be fully aware of what you’re trying to achieve. It may simply be taking them on a quiet walk where they can just be themselves and relish in the intensity of the moment by focusing on each other.  The perfect lighting, the magic view point and the technique is where you’ll get to have your fun.

By setting the tone to help them relax, you can capture it when the candid moment happens naturally. That’s what we call going from a good image to a great image. The magic formula for illustrative wedding photography is to capture a gorgeous artistic background seizing your couple in a candid moment. It doesn’t get any better than that! Once more, we do feel that illustrative wedding photography needs to be blended with other styles as well to truly capture well-rounded wedding stories. Plus, it’ll make for a versatile range of wedding albums!
